History of Şişli region
Until the 1800s, Sisli was a suburb of Istanbul, used for hunting and farming and leisure. The area was developed as a middle-class residential area in the last years of the Ottoman Empire and the early years of the Republic of Turkey (late 19th-early 20th century). French culture was an important influence during this period, and the wide avenues of Sisli were lined with large stone buildings with high ceilings and wrought-iron balconies of nouveau motifs, often with elevators in the middle of the staircases.
This business middle class consisted of Jews, Greeks, and Armenians, as well as some Turks, many of whom built homes in Sisli after the great fire in the neighboring Beyoğlu region in 1870. To this day, several families of local Armenians of Istanbul community live in Kurtuluş neighborhood of Sisli.
The area was also popular with the Levantine merchant families of this period who settled in Istanbul for trade or were contracted by the Ottoman Empire. Sisley Istanbul attracted immigrants from the former possessions of Greece and the Balkans. At the end of the 19th century, Sisli Istanbul was one of the first areas to have tram lines, electricity and natural gas. Darülaceze Orphanage and Şişli Etfal Grand Hospital were built during this period, as well as the French schools of St. Michel and Notre Dame d’Ession.
After the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in the 1920s, larger and larger buildings were built along wide avenues such as Halaskargazi Caddesi, the main road that runs through the middle of Sisli in Istanbul with its small arches of shops under high-rise apartment buildings and offices. . During the Republican era, this area continued to be the residence of the middle class as well as dealers. The Istanbul Bosphorus Hilton Hotel was built here in the 1950s, and many others followed, such as theaters, cafes, and other cultural facilities.
