History of Kartal district of Istanbul
Kartal was a fishing village on the coast of Marmara during the Byzantine Empire called Kartalimen (Kartalimen in Greek), founded in the 6th century.
In the eleventh century, this region was conquered by the Seljuk ruler Suleiman Shah, and then in 1329, it became part of the Ottoman Empire. According to the census conducted in 1881 to 1893, at that time Kartal had a population of about 12,969 people, which consisted of 6,920 Greeks, 5095 Muslims, 869 Armenians, 3 Catholics and 81 foreign citizens.
